What Happens Without a Chimney Cap
An uncapped flue admits rain directly onto the smoke shelf and into the firebox. That standing water seeps into the clay tile liner, the surrounding mortar, and eventually the masonry. Through Idaho's freeze-thaw cycles, that moisture expands inside the material and forces it apart. After several winters, a minor entry point becomes a cracked liner, spalled brick, or a failed crown. Wildlife is the other cost. Chimney swifts, starlings, and squirrels nest inside uncapped flues. A nest blocking the flue creates a carbon monoxide condition the next time the fireplace is used. Raccoons entering through an uncapped chimney can reach the firebox damper and into the home. None of these outcomes are unusual. They are predictable, and a cap prevents all of them.

Single-Flue and Multi-Flue Cap Options
Single-flue caps fit over one flue and are the standard installation for most residential chimneys. They are available in stainless steel and copper. Stainless steel caps come with a lifetime warranty against rust and corrosion. Copper caps develop a natural patina and are popular on brick chimneys where the color complement is a factor. Multi-flue caps span the full width of the chimney crown and cover multiple flues under one cover with a shared mesh enclosure. They provide superior weather protection and are the better choice for chimneys with two or more flues in close proximity.

Top-Mounted Dampers
For homeowners who want both a cap and a more airtight seal when the fireplace is not in use, top-mounted dampers are an alternative to traditional throat dampers. A top-mounted damper sits at the chimney crown and seals the flue with a gasket when closed. This eliminates the column of cold air that sits in the flue in winter and drafts into the firebox, which is the source of the cold air smell many homeowners notice from a traditional fireplace on cold days. Spark Arrestors and Fire Code Compliance
